Tim Garland

Tim Garland

Tim Garland is one of the UK's finest jazz exports. His varied career began with the world famous Ronnie Scotts band after studying composition with Robert Saxton at the Guildhall School.
Amongst the many world famous artists Tim has played with, Chick Corea and Bill Bruford are probably the most influential in Tim Garland’s Career.

He toured with Chick Corea's Origin band for a year and a half and has since appeared regularly with Corea in quartets and quintets, including on Corea's newly released CD and DVD box set. Chick Corea stated Tim is "one of my favourite saxophone players and composers." Garland also toured with Bill Bruford's Earthworks for three years and they co-headline a CD released Jan 06, recorded live at the Iridium, NYC

Tim has been crossing musical boundaries for many years now with a fascination for blurring the line between composed and improvised music. He has written concertos for piano and saxophone (the latest is to be a BBC broadcast, broadcast on the 27th of June 08 called “Homage To Father Bach”. On the same concert he performs the Bach Dminor Oboe Concerto on soprano sax). He has fulfilled commissions for the Northern Sinfonia, LSO, BBC Concert Orchestra, Lincoln’s Symphony Orchestra Nebraska, and his music has been played by many other orchestras and large ensembles such as Boston and Sydney Symphony Orchestras, the RPO and the choir of Westminster Abbey.

Tim Garland is also a multi award winner including receiving “Best British Jazz Artist” by the Houses of Parliament.
As well as a fantastic composer and multi-instrumentalist Tim is also a professor at the Royal Academy Of Music and is Composer-Fellow and lecturer at Newcastle University. He regularly works with the Young Big Band Jambone and carries out workshops for musicians of all ages up and down the country.
This year is another exciting and varied year for Tim Garland, his Lighthouse project released a major CD ”Libra” with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra on Global Mix. Spawned from Garland's recording "If The Sea Replied," this innovative trio of piano, mixed percussion, and sax/bass clarinet showcases Garland's celebrated writing skills. Garland is joined by virtuoso Israeli-born percussionist, Asaf Sirkis, on bass Udu (who sits cross-legged) as well as a variety of cymbals and a Hang (a kind of inverted steel pan) and by Gwilym Simcock on piano who is the UK's brightest new jazz star, winning amongst many others both the BBC Jazz Awards and the British Jazz Awards.  They have just completed a world tour including visits to the USA, China, Korea, Hong Kong, Australia and Europe.

Other collaborations and projects Include:
Work with the McFalls Chamber Ensemble, Britten Sinfonia, Northern Underground Orchestra, Lighthouse Project, Acoustic Triangle and commissions with the LSO and CBSO.
